You can’t have a relationship with a number, whether it’s one or 10,000. Social marketing is about reaching out, establishing and building relationships. It should never be a race to see who can collect more followers or friends faster. Numbers without faces are meaningless, in social marketing and in target-less marketing of any kind.
I defy anyone with 10,000 Twitter followers to 1) know who those people are or, even more importantly, 2) what they really care about.
If the people you reach don’t have anything more in common with you than a keyword and could really care less about much of what you have to say, it’s all a lot of wasted time and effort.
Reach out to people who are prime prospects or existing customers. Talk to them in their language about things that are important to them, not just you. Ask for their input and give them something of value back in return. Make it meaningful, not just marketing — always. …. Lori Martinek, www.mybusinesscounselor.com
