Time is money. How many of us want to spend our time or our money in a learning opportunity that doesn’t meet our needs? Lectures and workshops are very different animals. Lectures work better for larger groups, but don’t allow for a lot of ongoing speaker and participant interaction. Workshops, on the other hand, should be just that: a working session where participants learn — and learn to work together — while actively interacting with their instructor. It should be an interactive, engaging process that not only instructs, but offers immediate opportunities to apply what is being learned. Learn, apply, retain. That’s a great use of your time and money.
This is also why large lectures often come with smaller breakout sessions: to provide the interactive back-and-forth that is essential to creating a memorable, and productive, learning experience — for both the participants and the instructor. I look forward to every workshop and speaking engagement as an opportunity to learn something new. You should too. …. Lori.
